(FEB. 2011) NORDJYSKE DISTRIBUTION A/S has purchased Transvision Route Planner with the object of optimising the transport and delivery of printed media. Nordjyske Distribution is part of Nordjyske Medier, which is a Danish media group with approximately 600 employees and an annual turnover of more than DKK 700 million. The company, which is based in northern Jutland, distributes six different newspapers as well as phonebooks, weekly magazines, department store circulars, etc.
Transvision Route Planner will be used for optimising master routes for 45 haulier vehicles handling the daily transport of the printed matter to cross-docking sites and retail outlets, and for the optimisation of 1,500 paper boy routes for home delivery.
In the newspaper business, there is much fluctuation in the customer base. Subscribers will leave, new ones will join, and some will pause their deliveries due to holidays and such. Besides this, large ad hoc orders, for instance concerning phonebook distribution, must sometimes be handled all of a sudden as well.
This means that the master routes must be adjusted on a daily basis. Transvision Route Planner will therefore be set up to take the adjusted order pool into consideration when carrying out daily sequence optimisation. The new sequentially optimised routes will then be handed out to the drivers, who are external hauliers, and to the paper boys.
Finally, Nordjyske Distribution will be able to use Transvision Route Planner for simulating different structure scenarios. An important aspect of this is their ability to use the system for calculating the costs of distributing new types of goods when bidding for tenders.
